Ingredients

  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp mustard powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • tsp cinnamon
  • tsp black pepper

Instructions

  • In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the apple cider vinegar, low-sodium soy sauce, water, brown sugar, ground ginger, mustard powder, onion powder, garlic powder, cinnamon, and black pepper. Ensure that all the ingredients are evenly distributed in the saucepan.
  • Place the saucepan on your stovetop over medium heat. Stir the mixture continuously to prevent any clumping or burning. Your goal is to bring the mixture to a boil. This should take just a few minutes.
  • Once your Worcestershire sauce mixture reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low. Allow it to simmer gently for approximately 1 minute. This simmering step is crucial for melding the flavors together and slightly thickening the sauce.
  • After simmering, remove the saucepan from the heat and let the Worcestershire sauce cool to room temperature. As it cools, you’ll notice the flavors intensify and harmonize.
  • Once the sauce has cooled, transfer it to a clean, airtight container. Seal it securely and store it in the refrigerator.

Notes

Here are a few ideas for how to use it:

  • Marinades: Use it as a flavorful base for marinades, whether for steak, chicken, or vegetables. The acidity and umami notes will tenderize and flavor your ingredients beautifully.
  • Sauces: Incorporate your Worcestershire sauce into barbecue sauces, gravies, or stir-fry sauces for an extra layer of complexity.
  • Dressings: Add a dash of Worcestershire sauce to salad dressings or vinaigrettes for a unique and zesty twist.
  • Bloody Mary: Elevate your brunch game by mixing Worcestershire sauce into your Bloody Mary cocktails for that classic tangy kick.
  • Flavor Enhancer: Use it sparingly in various dishes to enhance the overall flavor profile. A few drops can make a world of difference in soups, stews, and casseroles.
